Systems Design : Chore Motivation

To understand the underlying mental and emotional patterns of inactivity in working individuals. To analyze the discrepancy between task priority / time / management / decision making and the individuals inactivity in spite of capability. To enhance chore motivation with focus on enthusiasm, positive emotions & discipline.
Task listing process was selected as a potential activity of organization to provide us insights on users mental model.

project Details

Data collection:
To gather data on list making and other discipline tools that individuals use to plan time and tasks across age groups. To try and figure out why people end up achieving less.

Target User groups:
School student (12 std)
College Student (UG/PG)
First Year Work experienced
Executives/Managers

Methods of Data Collection:
Identify 20 list makers and 20 non list makers. Encourage people to make list for the day and write a progress report every 2-3 hours of their day, expectations, achievements, beliefs physical patterns & mental state. Identify target group and interview them and collect objects (artifacts).

Analysis:

  • People make task lists to facilitate planning and productivity.
  • People tend to forget, procrastinate, avoid, etc. and end up under achieving.
  • Problem can even exist with the overestimation or underestimation of tasks.
  • Keep tab/Be aware of things to done
  • To not forget even smallest of task
  • Procrastinate less when you have a realistic idea of the work
  • Have more flexibility when deciding what to do and when to do it because you determine which tasks have high priority
  • Can have both a short- and long-range view of the work coming up

Solutions (Process Centric Model-B J Fogg was reffered for coming up with design solutions :

  • Maximum efficiency of a user can be increased by bringing their behavior under control.
  • The users need to be inspired and motivated whenever possible to carry out tasks.
  • The users need to reflect back on their finished/unfinished tasks.
  • Make people like the work they do
  • Mental strength and the firmness are essential to remove laziness.
  • Make the work itself for interactive/engaging/satisfying
  • Reduce the body stress levels
  • Make realistic tasks lists
  • Make people like the work they do

The products conceptualized for facilitating chore motivation were as following:

  • Inspirational Statue: An Interactive Statue with person recognition feature provides inspiration and guidance. It can be installed in public spaces for its usage.
  • InfoVis Representations: A person/group's movements is mapped and represented in terms of videos/graphical formations(patterns)/color codes. This would encourage and provide status of work carried by its various branches or people accordingly to gauge productivity. This will encourage healthy competition and
  • Work State Board: It can be placed in a places having easy access and specifically in a university scenario. It provides an easy access to view current status of a work being executed or the involvement of a user(in this case professor) in work. It depicts whether a person is busy or is available for interaction. Other messager can be also used for depiction accordingly.
Details of other solutions to be added.
